本日をもって、国連広報センターの2016年夏季インターン5人がインターンシップを終了します。今回は、６月から３ヶ月にわたったインターン生活の振り返りを、Q＆A形式でお届けします。

～2016年夏季インターンを終えて～
Q: 一番印象に残った出来事は何でしたか？
Jenny: 一番印象に残った経験は、私のインターンシップの最初の一週間に行われた日本人のパラリンピック選手のマセソン美季さんのインタビューです。その時は、インターンシップが始まったばかりだったのでUNICがパラリンピックとどのように関係しているのか分かりませんでした。しかし、マセソンさんとのインタビューをきっかけに、マセソンさんが女性パラリンプック選手として、今まで経験した事と、2020年東京パラリンピックに向けての仕事についての話を聞いてから、国連の仕事の目標は、核兵器をなくすのような深刻なことだけではなく、スポーツでも平和と平等を作れることが分かるようになりました。
Kyoka: 広島と長崎の平和記念式典に参加するためにキム・ウォンス国連軍縮担当上級代表が来日した時にお会いできたのが一番印象的でした。キム代表と写真家のレスリー・キーさんが学生向けのトークイベントにゲストとして登壇し、なぜ持続可能な開発目標は平和構築に不可欠なのか、そして私たちが学生として何ができるのかを語ってくださいました。とても貴重なお話が聞けて、インターン期間中の一番印象に残った経験となりました。
Soyun: NGO「ピースボート」が主催した出港式に参加したことが一番印象的でした。私たちが出港式で見届けた第92回のピースボートは、軍縮と平和のメッセージを伝えるために全世界を航海するプロジェクトです。出港式の前の参加者の方々の記者会見で、被爆者の方から直接お話をうかがったことが特に印象に残っています。被爆でお兄さんを亡くされた方のお話でしたが、何十年もの時が経っても悲しみが癒えないことを感じました。記者会見を通じて、ピースボートに乗船する人々の心持ちや思いを感じ取ったうえで参加した出港式はより意味深く感じられました。私にとって忘れられない経験です。
Q: インターンを通して学んだこととは？
Kyoka: 国連広報センターの運営するブログや、参加させていただいたインタビューなどを通して、「国連の仕事」は簡単に一括り出来ないほど、いろんな種類の仕事や職場がある事を学びました。国連の傘下にある機関や団体ひとつひとつの活動があって、初めて幅広い環境や地域で深刻な課題に取り組むことができることを改めて認識することができました。この3ヶ月を通して、自分が将来どんな機関でどのような仕事に携わりたいのか、より具体的なイメージをつかむことができました。
Ayako:国連についての理解が深まったと同時に、広報活動に携われたことは貴重な経験でした。一つの記事が新聞に載るまでに取材依頼など数々のステップがあること、注目を浴びる出来事の裏側で、リアルタイムでメディアの動きをモニタリングしていること、一字一句までこだわって注意深く発信しようとする姿勢…普段何気なく世の中に溢れる情報にふれていましたが、その背景にこれだけの細やかな動きがあるということはとても印象的でした。広報センターに身を置いたからこそ体得できた「広報」の視点でした。
Kaoruko: 私はUNICでのインターンを通し、広報活動の大切さを学びました。まず毎朝行う新聞クリッピングでは国内問題、国際問題など世界で起きている出来事を認知することの大切さを改めて実感しました。またUNICのブログ作業やFacebookのポスト作成を通じ、国連が取り組んでいる幅広い課題を多くの人に知ってもらう大切さも学びました。特に持続可能な開発目標(SDGs)についてはフォトコンテスト、テーマソングのお披露目会など様々なイベントに携わることができました。国連が取り組む課題解決のためにも、まず多くの人が課題を認知することが重要です。その上で、UNICが行っている広報活動に自分も携わり、その大切さを経験することが出来ました。そして、実際に国連で働く方々と出会い、現場でのお話も伺うことが出来たのも、とても貴重な経験となりました。このインターンシップを通し、国連をより身近に感じるようになったと同時に自分の夢をより明確にすることが出来ました。
Q: なぜこのインターンに応募しようと思いましたか？
Ayako :以前から、どうすれば地球規模での豊かさを実現できるのかという問題意識がありました。環境問題の解決や平和の維持は一朝一夕では実現しない、では私に何ができるのだろうかと模索していたとき、このインターンシップを見つけました。国際機関の取り組みを内部から実感することが、この先の社会と自分の関わり方を考えていく際に貴重なものさしになると思い応募しました。
Soyun: 国際学校から国際関係に興味を持つようになりましたが、大学2年までは漠然と卒業したら国際機関で働きたいと考えていたに過ぎませんでした。3年生の時に交換留学をした際、国際機関に興味を持っている人達に出会うことができ、今から将来にどのような道に進みたいのかを真剣に考えることになりました。これがきっかけで、留学から帰って過ごす長い夏休みの間に国連でインターンをやりたいと思い、UNIC Tokyoに応募しました。
Kaoruko: 私は人生の半分近くを海外3カ国で暮らした経験や学部時代に国際関係を専攻した経験などから、将来は国際機関で働きたいと考えるようになりました。そこで、国連の活動について知るためにUNIC で広報活動に携わり、国連の働きや日本と国連のつながりを学びたい思い、このインターンシップに応募をしました。
Q: What did you find the most challenging?
Ayako: I think the most challenging element of the internship was to inform the worldwide problems as not distantly but closely related issues with us. Several experiences from the internship made me reflect on the connection between the UN and the public. I personally assume that many people think works of the UN are not directly linked to their day-to-day lives. Through this internship, I have been convinced that it is significant to think what each of us can do to achieve global goals.
Kyoka: I think the most challenging aspect of the internship was learning how to cater information towards a Japanese audience, that has specific societal expectations in regards to the media they consume. Slight differences in the delivery of these information can have distinct implications, especially because subtlety plays such an important role in Japanese semantics. Through composing social media posts and translating articles for UNIC, I gradually learned how to highlight certain aspects of an event or UN initiative to make the organization more accessible and relatable to the Japanese public. These past three months have allowed me to reflect on the importance and responsiblity that comes with a position that involves disseminating information.
Q: What have you gained from the experience?
Jenny: Spending a summer living and working a 9 till 5 internship in a country that is not home is not without its challenges. However, I have learnt to embrace the challenging aspects. For example, as a foreigner, UNIC Tokyo is a unique place to gain an insight into the role of the UN in Japan, and to understand what causes are particularly important to the Japanese public. I feel like this understanding is something that I can use to help shape my career choices and goals for the future.
Soyun: UNIC is a unique place where I could experience the international atmosphere of the UN and Japanese atmosphere at the same time. Doing office work and communicating with staff members and other interns in English and Japanese taught me what it is like to work in an international office. I also had an opportunity to meet Japanese UN staff members from different areas of work and different UN offices. Listening to their stories was a meaningful opportunity for me because the experiences they spoke of cannot be earned without working at the field. It motivated me a lot to consider wokring at an international organization.
Q: What advice would you give to future international applicants?
Jenny: Before applying, think carefully about why you want to do the internship and what you want to gain from it. This will help you make an impression during the interview, and also allow you to ask the right questions in order to understand whether or not it is the right job for you. A three month internship is a fairly big commitment, particularly coming from abroad, and it does not hurt to be certain before starting. Once you are here, you’ll find that the UNIC office and your fellow interns are easy to get along with, make friends and make the most of being in Tokyo!
